Drinks and Cocktails with a summer/fall theme.
Drinks and Cocktails with a summer/fall theme.I wanted something cozy and warm for this shot, a comforting and serene moment that reminds you of the times you had at home in front of the fireplace. So I combined my two favorite things, citrus and sweet treats. I really loved it and it drives home the point of warmth and those crispy autumn days.
Seafood Surprise.
Seafood Surprise.I love reds and bright colors when it comes to food, and this shot was all about contrast. Seafood, tomatoes, bright herbs, the works. Anything that stood out against a dark background was my best friend and this shot made my mouth water more than anything else I shot that month. Verdant and tangy.
Lemon Lime Desserts.
Lemon Lime Desserts.Who doesn’t love a lemon pastry? The tangy twang of lime and the fresh zest of lemon inspired me to put this together. Pastries are one of my favorite thing to shoot just because I get to eat any treats that don’t make the cut. This one I lit dramatically to showcase those bright yellows and greens and it worked beautifully. Mouthwatering.
Extravagance and Luxury Tea Time.
Extravagance and Luxury Tea Time. This shot took 2 hours to set up perfectly and it was worth every second. Inspired by the royal tea times in London, England, I wanted to do my spin on this lovely morning ritual and add a little more mystery. The result is something brooding, intriguing, and above all delicious. You’d never think making the light and bright subject of morning tea into something more dangerous would work, but it did. Compelling.
The Perfect Burger
The Perfect BurgerNothing says American cuisine like a giant delicious burger, and getting the triumph of this one was key. Not only did I want to shine a light on the perfect layering and ingredient choices, but the down home charm and warmth that accompanies a pub burger like this. Delicious, deep, and incredibly appetizing. You can’t go wrong with the simple ones.
Shredded Carrots and Protein.
Shredded Carrots and Protein.Texture! Nothing more fun that combining two different kinds of texture in one place. For this, I wanted to expand the texture beyond the food and add it to the setting/table as well. The gritty table and the thatched napkins were meant to mimic the shredded carrots and fatty veal. It tasted even better than it looked. Scrumptious.
World's Healthiest Sandwich.
World's Healthiest Sandwich. This shot was all about being as fresh and green as possible. Roasted eggplant, freshly picked arugula lettuce, and tons of cauliflowers and celery sticks to fill you up. I really wanted to show abundance and bounty in this, something that would make you want to gobble it up without thinking twice. It’s supposed to set off the dinosaur part in your brain that sees bright colors and immediately runs towards them. Expressive.
Strawberry Jars and Quinoa.
Strawberry Jars and Quinoa.Quinoa’s such an incredible food that’s finally getting some respect in the culinary world. We food photographers have known about it’s beauty forever, as it’s one of the most aesthetic foods to shoot given it’s sheen and rough texture. No matter what you pair it with, it’ll always improve it, and you can never go wrong. So when it comes to crowd pleasers, I had to partner it with some strawberry and cream to really put it over the top. Comforting.
Absinthe Dream Cocktail.
Absinthe Dream Cocktail.Absinthe is one of the most breathtaking drinks I have ever seen. It’s immediately captivating the second you lay eyes on it and it only gets more and more vibrant when you start mixing elements into it. For this, lime juice, shredded herbs, bitter, and ice were the partners in crime. And the added volume from the ice really elevated this already enticing drink to something legendary. Scintillating.
Chicken and Waffles Lunch.
Chicken and Waffles Lunch. The more protein the better, and what better food to pair fried chicken with than a freshly cracked over easy egg. We had a very short window of time to get this shot because these are the two most violate foods when it comes to photography. The egg will run too soon and ruin the shot or the grease from the chicken will spread everywhere and form a stain that just looks unappetizing. It wasn’t easy, but I’m sure you’ll agree the result was well worth it. Hearty
English Roasted Turkey.
English Roasted Turkey.Thanksgiving is my favorite time of the year and the humble turkey is the star in our shot. For this, I wanted to light it fairly hard in order to get the dark and rich texture of the skin to pop off on the smooth dark background. Crispy turkey skin is absolute heaven when you eat it fresh out the oven, and I really wanted the viewer to be able to feel that sensation between their teeth when they looked at this. Home cooking.
The Protein Tower of Power.
The Protein Tower of Power. This right here is the ideal bodybuilders meal. Tons of eggs, mountains of ham, and a little greenery to balance things out. I was inspired to make this after talking to a friend of mine who says he pyramids his meals so each meal is 1 pound heavier than the previous. That lit the fuse in me to put together this behemoth, which may seem small, but will absolutely keep you fueled for the day. Surprisingly, it was only 450 calories. Filling.
Oats and Dumplings.
Oats and Dumplings. Is this a really great breakfast or a really great lunch? I wanted to blur the lines and essentially make a brunch meal that would confuse anybody that looked at it. When do you eat this? With whom? Are those dumpling or soup balls? Nobody knows and that builds drama. Looking back, I really wish I would have cracked those dumpling open and showed what was inside. But oh well, something are better left unsaid. Shapeshifter.
Simply Potatoes.
Simply Potatoes.Who says every food shot has to be a spectacle of pomp and circumstance? For this, I wanted to preen and perfect the look of these potatoes so well that you wouldn’t need anything else to be satisfied. Expertly roasted, heavily seasoned, and presented without pretension or arrogance. Just down home hearty cooking that your grandma would make. Baohaus.
Mocha and Orange Sundae.
Mocha and Orange Sundae.I love anything with chocolate and oranges, so I used this shot to showcase how gorgeous the two are together. Drizzles of mocha sauce, a smattering of crushed macadamia nuts, and a goblet of orange cream soda with vanilla ice cream. If there was ever a drink that I would want to have on a desert island for the rest of my life, this would be it. Just absolute slushy and amber perfection. Indulgent.
Skillet Sensation.
Skillet Sensation. One pan meals have always been a hobby of mine. I love the challenge of seeing what foods will combine will together and can blend in harmony. For this, coriander, eggs, tomato paste, and dozens of Indian spices took center stage. The aim was to make a meal that looked as vibrant as it tasted. And after several skillets of taste tasting, I can assure you it did. Sensational.
Cornbread Composition.
Cornbread Composition. In the Southern regions of the United States, cornbread is seen as the ultimate comfort food. It’s versatility makes it suitable for any meal, it’s easy to prepare so kids are taught how to make it at a young age, and many family have a secret recipe of their own that gets passed down from generation to generation. It’s the southern hospitality I really wanted to showcase here with the chef presenting what he made especially for you in hopes you will enjoy the fruits of his labor. Kindness.
Lobster At It's Finest.
Lobster At It's Finest.I’ve always said the best things come in pairs, and for this shot I wanted to pair an underrated friend of lobster and all seafood together. Seafood pho, rich beef broth, and ramen noodles that were so al dente one bite will have you hopelessly hooked. It’s meant to be a feast for the soul as well as the eyes, and the splashes of red I put all over the composition are made to highlight all the different Asian culture that are in one shot. Unity.
Don't Save Dessert for Last.
Don't Save Dessert for Last.Appetizers and desserts in one place. I was always told growing up that you have to save the dessert for last. That the sweetest and most enjoyable part of the meal can’t be enjoyed immediately, but instead rewarded at the end of a long culinary struggle. I never liked that concept, and so this is my way of rebelling against that old adage. Forget about saving the best for last, eat the best and forget the rest. This is essentially what most of my meals look like nowadays as well, tons of chocolate and bountiful amounts of sugar. Heavenly.
Farmhouse Cuisine.
Farmhouse Cuisine.Spending countless days and nights on the farmlands of the Midwest taught me all about foraging for your food. How at the end of the day, you only eat if you collected enough from the harvest. And whatever you had, regardless if it was a lot or a little, you were going to enjoy every morsel of it. This is the height of that farmhouse feeling, making the most of what you have with basic and simple ingredients that taste oh so good. Savory.
